FAQ

Frequently asked

How accurate is the US Navy method?+

Accurate to ± 3% for most adults. More accurate than BMI for lean or muscular people. DEXA scans are the gold standard for research.

Is this the same as the Army Body Fat calculator?+

The Army and Navy use very similar tape-measure formulas — this calculator follows the Navy circumference method, which the Army also references.

Where do I measure the waist?+

Around the navel for men; at the narrowest point for women. Neck is measured just below the larynx.

Why do women need a hip measurement?+

The female formula includes hip circumference to account for typical fat-distribution differences.
